6th Grade Open House is on August 23, 2016 from 9 am to 11 am. See you there!
Hi! Welcome to "I Got Your Six"!
My name is Faith White. My experience with Northwest School of the Arts has been informative and I sure have learned a lot. I want to share it with you! My first son started 6th grade at NWSA fall 2013 in the visual arts program. My second son was in 6th grade at NWSA 2014-2015 in the Young Men's Chorus. My third son will be in 6th grade 2016-2017! I want to help in any way I can.
I don't know everything but I have e-mailed our patient 6th grade team so many times that I think I may be able to head off some of the basic questions and concerns that new parents have. That is the purpose of this site.
If you are a repeat 6th grade parent at NWSA, I would LOVE your help! Just fill out the "Contact Us" form and let me know.

Car Rider info:
You can drop your student off any time between 8:45 and 9:05 at the BACK of the school. They proceed to their first block class until the first bell rings at 9:05 and students can go to breakfast. The start of day bell rings at 9:15. End of day bell rings at 4:15. There is a fantastically long car line that backs up onto Beatties Ford Road so you will want to plan accordingly. I was very surprised at the end of the first day of school. It was a free-for-all with no staff on-site (that I could see). I was so used to elementary school car lines that it was quite shocking when kids just start pouring out of the buildings! As long as your student knows to wait on the sidewalk and watch for you, every thing will be fine. My secret was to park in the student parking lot. I would take the "back roads" to get to the back entrance and arrive at 3:55, get a parking place, and have my sons find me there. It worked out really well for us. You might want to look at a map to determine the best way out. Thoughts on students with 504s and IEPs: I strongly encourage parents to contact your child's teachers as soon as you know who they are and let them know what's going on with your child. The first few weeks of school are crazy and it is simply not fair for the teachers to be unaware and the students to be left hanging. The school will get the plans out but it's not until September (it wasn't last year). The middle school counselor, Ms. Washington, will be helpful. Please utilize patience as so many other parents are in the same situation as you. Things will work out! I promise!! |
